Chapter 4: The call that changes everything

"Rhys, please."

The voice was sweet. Too sweet for the position she held. Or so I thought.

"Hello, Rhys. I’m Smelik Terit, your new manager. I hope we get along wonderfully! Mr. Terki left an excellent report on you. We’re reviewing it now. You've helped with so many projects, big and small. Thank you so much for being so cooperative and reliable."

Wow. First time a manager has been so generous on a first call. Usually, you have to be a good little dog to be taken seriously.

"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Terit. I'm grateful for having Mr. Terki as my manager for so many years. I hope things go just as well with you, and even better. We've got bigger and better projects ahead."

I squinted my eyes shut, hoping I’d buttered her up enough. I want the promotion. The raise. It’ll get me out of debt! Please, universe, be positive with me!

A faint but spirited laugh echoed through the line.

"That's what I like to hear, Rhys! I can see now why Mr. Terki's report was so glowing. Wonderful! I need you to come to the office, please. We're having that... you know, that 'silly thing', a welcome party. So you should come, even though you work from home! And come dressed casually, not formally. Don't judge by me! and goodbye for now"

Something is wrong. She's too nice for this job. She won’t last long.

"Of course, Ms. Terit. I'll be there tomorrow. I’ll follow your instructions and wear a simple pair of pants and a light grey t-shirt. Just as you asked. Although, if you want, we could also discuss some issues that have come up... after the 'silly party' as you called it. So, I'll see you in person tomorrow. Goodbye!"

My gut tells me I'm in trouble. Why am I playing along with this?
I know she's going to suck me dry. Something is off. She's either naive or she's putting on a show. I’ll follow her instructions.

It could be a trap!
It reminds me of the Napoleon opening in chess.
